Joint Replacement

Collectively The Sport & Spine Institute brings many years of experience to managing and treating joint complications resulting from degenerative joint diseases such as arthritis, musculoskeletal disease or joint trauma. We work closely with our patients to utilize all non-operative treatments prior to discussing joint surgery however if these options no longer give patient relief joint replacement might be an option.

Below are a list of questions the Sport & Spine Institute recommends asking yourself to help determine if you are ready for a joint replacement:
  * Do you hurt every day of the week?
  * Is the non-operative treatment no longer effective?
  * Is your pain in charge of your life?
  * Are you willing to commit to work hard during rehabilitation for
    a successful recovery?

Arthroscopy

arthoscopy

Arthroscopy is a surgical procedure our doctors use to visualize, diagnose, and treat problems inside a joint.

When an orthopaedic surgeon uses this procedure a small incision is made in the patient's skin and a pencil sized instrument is inserted which contains lighting and a small lens used to magnify and illuminate the structures within the joint.

The arthroscope is attached to a small display where the image of the joint can be seen allowing the surgeon to look throughout the joint and directly inspect and investigate cartilage, ligaments, and under areas like the knee cap. This procedure allows for the determination of the amount or type of injury and potentially allows us to make a repair or correct a problem if it is necessary.

Arthroscope is great in that it is minimally invasive which means less time for healing and a quicker recovery as opposed to surgeries that require larger incisions and require more time to heal.

MRI Imaging

MRI Machine

MRI is the acronym for Magnetic Resonance Imaging. It is a procedure used to scan patients to determine the severity of certain injuries. The MRI machine uses magnetic field and radio waves to create very detailed images of the body.

As in the picture our MRI machine looks like a long tube. The circular area is what houses the large magnet. To begin the patient is laid down on the table then the technician slides a coil to the specific area targeted for imaging. The coil is receives the signal magnetic resonance signal as input into the machine. The final product is a 3D image representation of the area that was scanned. Even better, there is no ionizing radiation involved with an MRI.

The procedure is noninvasive so it is painless. A loud tapping noise will be heard as the electromagnets are turned on and off throughout the scan. In some cases the patient my have earplugs in order to lessen the noise.
